Louisa May Alcott was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. There, she knew and worked with such famous American authors as Ralph Waldo Emerson
and Henry David Thoureau.
She served as a nurse during the Civil War(1861-1865). Her letters home during this time were later published under the name Hospital Sketches(1863). In 1871,
she published her most famous work, Little Women. Sequels to this classic of American literature include Little Men(1871) and Jo's Boys(1886).
Little Women is an autobiographical novel
about life in New England during Alcott's childhood. This work secured Louisa May Alcott's place as one of the premier American writers of the 19th century.
